Anyone who is planning to conducting business in Tustin, CA will need to obtain a business license from the Finance Department. The City of Tustin website has an application for a business license available online to be filled in and printed, or you may pick one up in person by visiting the Finance Department at 300 Centennial Way. You will need to contact the Planning Division to determine whether your proposed business activities are accepted in the property that you wish to use. You will want to contact the Planning Division prior to signing any lease or purchase agreements to be certain that the property that you wish to use is acceptable for the zone in which it falls. To complete your business license application you will need to have information on your business, yourself, and all owners of your business. Some of the business information includes the type of ownership of your business, that is, whether you own it solely, are a part owner, or are part of a limited liability corporation. You may need to obtain a federal employer’s ID number, a state employer’s ID number, and a seller’s permit number depending on the type of ownership and the nature of your business. Your business will need a name, a physical and mailing address, an e-mail, cell phone, website, and a main business line. The name, home address, phone number, and driver’s license number of each owner should be provided. You need to declare the number of employees you will be hiring, a description of your business activities, and the date that your business will commence. When you have completed this application, you will need to sign it denoting that you are providing only true and complete information. There is a section of ‘yes or no’ questions following the business license application that serves to collect information on your business location and your business activities. A permit screening form for the Orange County Fire Authority needs to be completed. If you are planning to operate your business from your place of residence, you will need to complete a home occupation questionnaire in addition to your business license and permit screening questionnaire. The home occupation questionnaire can be found online at the City of Tustin website and has questions regarding aspects of your home business, such as where your business parking will be located, whether you are planning to hire employees, if you will have clients visiting your home to conduct business, etc. A description of your business activities and information about the physical location are included in the questionnaire as well. What costs are you expected to pay for a Tustin business license?

Your costs will be based on gross receipts and the type of business you plan to conduct. The fees for gross receipts is a fee for businesses that make $25,000 or less and a different fee for those businesses that make $600,000 and over. There are enumerated businesses that are included in the business tax schedule, some of which include: day care or nursery, pawnshop dealer, health club, etc. Your business license fees are due annually and are valid from January 1 through December 31.
