I want to open a business in Hemet. Where should I start?

Anyone wanting to open a business in Hemet should start by by filling out an application for a business license. You can print one from the City of Hemet website or you can request one in person at 445 East Florida Avenue. The business license application is a one-page document that requests important information about your proposed business including:

  1. Business name
  2. Physical address of your business
  3. Business contact information
  4. A description of your proposed business activities
  5. If applicable, you will need to submit federal and state tax ID numbers and/or your social security number
  6. Type of ownership (sole proprietor, partnership)
  7. Primary owner’s current contact information
  8. Emergency contact name and phone number
  9. Type of business (service/retail, contractor, contractor with only one job, or rental property). Each of the choices will have applicable information to be provided
  10. Signature stating that all information is true and accurate

What if I plan to run a business from my home?

If you plan to run your business from your place of residence, you will need a home occupancy certificate in addition to your business license. You can print the certificate from the City of Hemet website. The Hemet home occupancy certificate is a list of regulations that you must be in compliance with in order to run a business from your home. Home occupancy regulations include items such as restrictions on employing persons from outside your own residence, using more than 25% of your total square footage for your business, and posting signs. You should contact the City of Hemet Planning Department at (951) 765-2375 to discuss your home occupancy certificate and all regulations associated with running a business from your home. 

Will I need other Hemet permits or Hemet licenses?

You may, depending on the type of business you plan to conduct. There may be additional federal, state, and/or local permits that will be needed before you commence business. For example, you could need a certificate of occupancy from the City of Hemet Building and Safety Department if you plan to run a commercial business. If you plan to run a business such as, but not limited to, an ambulance service, entertainment, vending, massage, or taxi, you will need special approval.
