If you plan to open a business in Folsom, there are nine categories into which your proposed business might fall:

  1. Home Occupation
  2. General (Annual Gross Receipts)
  3. Manufacturing, Wholesale, and Service Professional

Home Occupation:

If you are planning to open your business in your place of residence, you will need to contact the City Planning Department by calling (916) 355-7214. You will need to submit your application by hand to the Community Development Department at 50 Natoma Street, on the second floor of the City Hall building. 

General (Annual Gross Receipts), Sub-contractors and Special Events:

If your proposed business is not listed in any other of the separate categories, or falls under sub-contractors, or special events, you will need to have an Annual Gross Receipts application, which can be printed from the City of Folsom website. General businesses would include such businesses as landscapers, beauty salons, restaurants, and commercial day care centers. Your application will need to be completed accurately and returned by hand or mailed with the heading “ATTN: Business License” to the City of Folsom, 50 Natoma Street, Folsom CA, 95630.

Manufacturing, Wholesale and Service Professionals:

These professionals include doctors, dentists, accountants, real estate brokers, massage therapists, hair-dressers and cosmetologists. If your business falls in this category, you will need to complete a Manufacturing, Wholesale and Service Professionals application which can be printed off at the City of Folsom website. The application, along with a new license tax fee and any other applicable fees, will need to be submitted by hand or mailed with the heading “ATTN: Business License” to the City of Folsom, 50 Natoma Street, Folsom CA, 95630.

Commercial, Industrial, and Research & Development:

This category includes any business that is in a commercial zone and does not fall within any other category, such as Intel or HP. You can print the application for Commercial, Industrial, and Research & Development from the City of Folsom website or request an application in person at the City of Folsom business license division at 50 Natoma Street in Folsom. 

Contractors:

Contractors will have to pay a fee and will not need a business license if the work that they do requires that they obtain a building permit. 

Exempt Folsom Business Licenses and Specialty:

If your business falls into this category, including peddlers, itinerant vendors, or street stands, you will need to print the Specialty application from the City of Folsom Website or request one in person at City Hall, 50 Natoma Street.

Card Rooms:

If you are opening a card room, you will need to contact the City of Folsom MuniServices at (866) 240-3665.

All Folsom licenses must be completed accurately. You will need to have a business name, a physical address for your business, and contact information. In all applications, you will need to state they type of ownership, meaning whether you are sole proprietor, part of a corporation or in a partnership. Each owner’s contact information, including home address, current telephone number and email address will need to be submitted. You may need tax ID information, seller’s permits, health permits, alcohol beverage control approval, fire inspections, police department approval, planning approval and building permits. You are responsible for having all permits and additional licenses before your business opens. You will be required to sign this application stating that you agree to abide all City of Folsom ordinances regarding operating business in Folsom, and that all the information you have provided is accurate and true. 

What fees are associated with business licensure in Folsom?

All Folsom business license applications will require a New Business Review Tax, but depending on the category your proposed business falls into, you may be required to pay additional fees. You should contact MuniServices at (866) 240-3665 to discuss your Folsom business license fees.
