Apply For A Business License Pleasanton, California

Are you looking for information about opening a business in Pleasanton, California?

Any person wishing to open a business, whether in the city of Pleasanton, a home occupation, or entering the city to do business from an outside office will need to apply for a business license. A business license application comes in three classifications:

  1. Pleasanton Business License Tax Application and Application for Exempt Home Occupation (for residential occupation)
  2. Pleasanton Business License Tax Application and Application for Zoning Approval (for a commercial location in Pleasanton)
  3. Pleasanton Business License Tax Application (if you come inside the city limits to conduct business, but your business base if located outside of the city limits)

Each of these applications can be filled out and printed from the City of Pleasanton website, or you can request them in person at the Business License Office, which can be found at 200 Old Bernal Avenue.

Have you chosen a business property?

If you have chosen a business property, you should make certain that it is zone approved by contacting the Planning Division at (925) 931-5600 prior to signing a lease or purchasing the property. Certain business activities are prohibited in certain zones, or may require additional permits. By contacting the Planning Division, they can help to determine if your business property is zone approved for the business that you wish to conduct and whether you will need additional permits for your business. You will then file a zoning approval application with the Planning Division.  It can be printed from the City of Pleasanton website. It is a brief application where you will describe your business activities, give information on your business, including address and phone number, etc.  It will need to be returned to the Planning Division at 200 Old Bernal Avenue where it will be reviewed and either approved or returned for more information. Once you have your zoning approval from the Planning Division, you can file your application for a business license.

What information will be needed on your Pleasanton business license application?

An application for a Pleasanton business license will require information specific to your business and information about the owner of your business, whether you are the sole owner, involved in a partnership, LLC, LLP, trust, or are part of a corporation. Your business will need a physical address as a mailing address will not be adequate, according to the state of California business and professions code section 17538.5. If your mailing address for your business is different than the physical address, you will need to provide it as well. Your business needs a phone number, and if you wish, you can give your email address and business website. Supply the name of the owner or owners of your business and provide current contact information with a home address, valid driver’s license information, and a social security number for each owner. If you are working as a contractor, the name, address, and phone number of the project you are working on needs to be given. You will need to state the number of employees you plan to hire, and provide an estimate of your gross receipts.

Once you have completed all of the information on the application, you will need to print it off, and then sign it denoting that all the information that you have provided is true and complete. Return the application either in person or by mail to the Business License Office at PO Box 520, Pleasanton, CA 94566. If you have any questions regarding your business license application, you can reach the Business License Office via phone at (925) 931-5440.

Will you need to pay any Pleasanton fees?

Your business license fees are based on your estimated gross receipts for the year, starting on January 1 of the current year, and ending on December 31 of the same year. You can expect to pay a fee depending on what your business is estimated to gross, and then additional fees after a certain amount. Contact the Pleasanton Business License Office if you have any questions, as this calculation is a requirement for a completed business license application.

Should you obtain other Pleasanton permits or Pleasanton licenses?

You may need to, depending on the type of business that you will be operating. Generally, if you plan to handle food, sell firearms, tobacco or alcohol, run a massage establishment or have an adult-oriented business, you will need to obtain additional licenses or permits. Please be aware that some of these licenses or permits may take up to eight weeks to be processed and issued. Contact the Planning Division at (925) 931-5600 to discuss additional permits and licenses with them to determine if you will need to apply for any others.
