Interested in starting a business in Apple Valley?

The first step in starting a business in Apple Valley is to contact the Planning Division at (760) 240-7000 ext. 7200 or by emailing planning@applevalley.org to discuss your plans. Once you have discussed your business ideas with the Planning Division, you will need to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O). You must print out the C of O application from the Town of Apple Valley website.

This four-page document asks questions pertaining to the use of your business space, what materials you will be using, if any hazardous materials will be used or produced at the place you conduct your business. Please note that you will need a new C of O even if your business moves or changes ownership. In addition to the C of O application, you are required to submit a Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority questionnaire that will pertain to all the waste that your business may produce.

If your business uses any film processing, there is a separate questionnaire that you will be required to submit. When you have completed your Certificate of Occupancy application, and the VVWRA questionnaire you will submit them with a $70 fee to the Building and Safety Department at the Town of Apple Valley at 14955 Dale Evans Parkway in Apple Valley. You should receive your issuance in about two weeks, but i f you have any questions you can call (760) 240-7000 ext. 7014.

How do I apply for my business license?

The next step to opening your business is to apply for your business license. This is done by filling out an application which can be printed from the Town of Apple Valley website or by visiting them in person at 14955 Dale Evans Parkway. The application for a business license must be completed; any information that is not complete will significantly slow down the issuance process. You must declare whether the application is for home occupation, change of owner or location, a new business or to reactivate an existing business license.

The application asks you to name your business, and to give the physical location of your business. A mailing address is required, as well as your business phone, fax and website. You will be asked to state what your business entails, what equipment and materials you will be using. The type of ownership of your business is very important, whether you are the sole proprietor, in a partnership, with a corporation, a non-profit organization, an LP or LLC. When you declare your ownership, your fees will be calculated accordingly. Your state license number, state tax permit number federal tax id number and state tax and/or social security number will need to be included on this business application. You need to provide personal information on yourself as the business owner, as well as other owners. Emergency contact and alarm company and property owner information is required.

Will I need other permits?

Certain businesses require that you have special permits. You may need a County Health Permit, an alcoholic beverages license, or a tobacco permit. If you plan to remodel your business location, you will need a building permit. You will need all permits in addition to your business license and will likely have separate fees. To find out if you are going to need additional permits, contact the Business License Clerk at the Town of Apple Valley.
