Apply For A Business License Napa, California

Thinking about doing business in Napa, California?

You will need to apply for a Napa business license. To request an application from the Finance Department, you can visit them in person at City Hall, 955 School Street or you can print one from the City of Napa website. In addition to your business license, you will need to have zoning approval from the City of Napa Planning Division. They can be reached at (707) 257-9530. You will want to contact the Planning Division to certify that your proposed business property is in the correct zone for the business activities that you will be conducting. It is wise to contact the Planning Division before signing any lease or purchasing any property to be sure you are not locked into paying for a property that cannot be used for your business.

What kind of information can you expect on the application for a Napa business license?

Your Napa business license application requests information about your business and needs to be completed fully for your license to be issued. If you need assistance completing your application or have questions, you should contact the Finance Division of the City of Napa at (707) 257-9508. Some of the information on the business license application is general and will be filled out no matter what activities you plan to conduct, and some will be applicable to certain businesses. Some general information that you will need to provide includes your business name, physical address, mailing address, and contact phone numbers of your business. You will also need to provide all owner contact information, a description of your business activities, the type of business you are conducting (contractor, professional, manufacturing, wholesale, retail, service, non-profit or property rental) and the ownership type (individual, partnership, corporation, LLC). The information specific to certain businesses includes whether you plan to serve alcohol or food, if you are a contractor, and if you will be making deliveries or working from home. When you complete your application, you will need to make four copies and return it to the Finance Department.

Is your Napa business going to be ran from your home?

If you are applying for a license to run your business from home, there are some additional things that you need to be aware of. First, you will still need to apply for a business license. Second, there is a special section on your business license application that will be used to apply for home occupation. This section has a summary of Code Section 17.68.040 and you will be required to initial each of the five regulations declaring that you agree to each condition. The conditions are: that your home occupation will not generate any traffic to or from your place of residence, that you will not hire employees other than family to work at your home occupation, that your business will not use more than 200 square feet of your home and/or garage, that only one commercial vehicle will be kept on your premises, and must be parked in your garage, and finally, that you will not list your residential address when advertising or printing material regarding your business. The third thing to be aware of is that you will be required to provide the name of your landlord, all applicable contact information, and a signature if you do not own your home. There is a non-refundable fee for processing a home occupation application.
