Are you considering opening a business in Santee, California?

Anyone who is wishing to operate a business in Santee, CA will need to apply for and be issued a business license from the City of Santee Finance Department. To apply in person for your business license, you will need to visit them at 10601 Magnolia Avenue in Santee. Alternately, you can print the application from the City of Santee website. Before you purchase or lease any business property, you will need to contact the Department of Development Services at (619) 258-4100 ext. 152 to discuss your proposed business and to determine if the property that you wish to use is not prohibited from business use. This simple step early on can save you money and time and should not be neglected.

What information is expected on a business license application in Santee?

The application for a business license is relatively short and requires basic information about your business and the activities that you plan to conduct. Questions such as if you will be using hazardous chemicals, whether you have a security alarm, if your business will be ran from your home, a description of your Santee business activities, and the type of ownership (sole proprietor, partnership, corporation) are included on the application. You will need to provide a name, physical and mailing address, and contact phone numbers for your business. All owner(s) contact information as well as a social security number will need to be given. You may need to provide a federal tax ID number, a state tax ID number,  seller’s permit number, and state or county permit number, depending on your ownership type and the type of business you will be conducting. When you have completed your application, you will need to sign it to verify that all the information you have provided is true and correct to the best of your knowledge. Your signature also certifies that you are aware that any fees you pay toward obtaining your business license is non-refundable and that you will comply with all laws, regulations, and conditions and you will obtain additional permits and licenses that are associated with conducting businesses in Santee.

Are you going to operate a Santee business from your home?

If your business will be operating from your home, you will need to download and review the home occupation rule sheet which is a list of regulations and restrictions regarding operating a home occupation. Some of these include not selling products from your home (excluding home-grown produce), that you will not hire persons outside of the residence to work for your home business, that you will not store materials or supplies intended for your business in your garage or outbuildings, that you will contact the owner of your home and that the owner must approve your business venture etc. You can download the rules and regulations for home occupation and the property owner authorization sheet from the City of Santee website.

Will you need to obtain other Santee licenses or permits?

It is likely that depending on the business you conduct, you may need to contact other agencies whether state, local and/or federal for additional permits or licenses. Some Santee businesses that may require additional permits include (but are not limited to):

  1. Dances
  2. Towing services
  3. Pawnshops
  4. Massage therapist
  5. Restaurant
  6. Pubs or bars

Some of these businesses will need approval from the County of San Diego Sheriff’s Department. These businesses will need to contact the Sheriff’s Department for an application for a regulatory business permit. You should contact the Finance Department to discuss any additional Santee permits or licenses you may need in order to commence your business. Be aware that some of these permits, approvals or licenses may take up to six weeks to process. That time should be taken into consideration for the projected start date of your Santee business because you will be in non-compliance of regulations and restrictions if you have not obtained these additional permits or licenses.

What costs are associated with applying for a Santee business license?

There is an annual fee for a Santee business license for the entire calendar year and a different fee for a home occupation permit. These fees do not include any additional fees that you may incur for other licenses or permits. You will need to renew your business license annually. Contact the Finance Department if you have questions regarding your fees.

Do you have further questions or concerns?

You can contact the City of Santee Finance Department at (619) 258-4100 extension 146, or you can visit them at 10601 Magnolia Ave in Santee. The City of Santee website has useful information that is helpful to those opening their own business as well.
