Apply For A Business License Carson , California

Looking to open a business in the city of Carson?

You will need to apply for a business tax certificate to open and operate a business in Carson. Once you receive your business tax certificate, you will be able to renew it annually. In addition to a business tax certificate, you will be required to have the approval of Planning & Environmental Service of Development Services Group, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and the Los Angeles County Health Department.

Some businesses also require an approval from the Sheriff’s Department.  This would also require that you have a business permit in addition to your business tax certificate. The Sheriff’s Department will review and investigate all permit applications and can deny permits based on several criteria, including whether the business would be considered a public nuisance, whether it would be a danger to public safety, health and welfare or morals, and/or whether the applicant has been found to have poor moral character.

Some businesses will be prohibited in certain areas of the city. You are encouraged to call the Planning Department at (310) 952-1761 before entering into any real estate agreement or contract on any properties, on the chance that they may not be acceptable for business. Even if you plan to operate your business from home, you will still be required to have approval from the Planning Department, and you must have a business tax certificate.

Are there fees for a business tax certificate?

The fees associated with the business tax certificate are actually processing fees and inspections. Expect to pay a fee for the application and an additional fee to renew a business tax certificate. Please note that this cost is separate from business taxes which are calculated based on numbers of employees and the type of business that you operate. If you move the location of your business, you will need to pay a transfer fee, and your transfer is pending the approval of all inspecting agencies. There may be other fees that you are subject to pay, depending on your business and if you are required to have other permits. To find more information on what type of fees you will need to pay, check the City of Carson website.
