What Is Required to Open a Business in the City of Alameda?

The City of Alameda requires that you register your business type, that your property be approved for business activities in the city, and that you have a fire inspection.

What type of Business Are You Planning to Operate?

In Alameda, your business will fall into one of four categories, Office, Retail, Industrial/Manufacturing or Service. Within these categories, your business will need to be declared under one of three classifications: Standard Business, Home Occupation or Contractor Only.

What Can You Expect for the Registration Applications?

The standard business registration application is a short, one page application that will take only a few moments to fill out. On it, you will declare the type of ownership whether it is sole proprietorship, a partnership, a corporation or a LCC (Limited Liability Company). You will be required to name your business, and give a description of what your business activities will entail. You will need to have a valid driver's license and the date that it expires. You must give names of other owners, the number of employees that you expect to employ at your business and the date you expect to begin operating your business. There is information requested on the property being used in the operation of your business. When you complete this application which can be downloaded and printed off, you must then send it along with all applicable fees to the finance department at 2263 Santa Clara Ave, room 230. The contractors license application, which can be downloaded and printed, is another short application that will need to be completed and returned with payment to the Finance Department at 2263 Santa Clara Ave. This application consists of one page requesting you to state your business name, your contractor type, whether you're the sole proprietor, in a partnership, part of a corporation or an LCC.

You must submit your Federal Employee ID Number or social security number, your contractor number, your start and estimated completion dates, and your annual gross receipts estimate in Alameda. You must declare if you will have any subcontractors, vendors or architects working in Alameda. Finally, you will need to provide the names of other owners of your business.

If you plan to register for a Home Occupation, you can find the application on the Community Development Department page. The application is a two page document that outlines the use of your home as a place of business. In it, you must describe the percentage or your home that will be used for your business, the description and name if your business, what materials and equipment will be used and how much pedestrian,auto and truck traffic will be expected. You must submit your Home Occupation application in person to the Permit Center at City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave, room 190.

You will be required to renew your license each year an pay any applicable annual fees. The renewal notice asks you to state your business name, location, owners, business type, social security number, tax rate category, contractors number, sales tax number, and confidential fiscal information (gross receipts, gross payroll, number if employees working in Alameda).

What Are the Fees Associated With Business Registration In Alameda?

The fees that you will be responsible for annually will be determined by the gross amount that your business will make in a year. You will pay a license fee of forty cents ($0.40) to each one thousand dollars of gross receipt or gross payroll. It will also be determined by the type of business license that you receive. If you are a contractor, the amount will be based on job amount. All business licenses expire on June 30,2011 and fees for new licenses will be prorated from August to June.

How Do You Receive Zoning Clearance for Your Business License Application?

Zoning clearance is a requirement of all new and relocating businesses in Alameda. You must have your zoning clearance issued before the Finance Department can issue you a business license. To apply for zoning clearance, you need to fill out a short application which will brought to the city of Alameda Permit Center at 2263 Santa Clara Ave, room 190. The application requires you to declare your type of business (office, retail, industrial/manufacturing, or service), how many employees you plan to employ, proposed hours of operation and a description of business activities. There are a series of yes/no questions which will determine if there are other permits needed to open your business.
