What is required to open a business in the city of Alameda?

The city of Alameda requires that you register your business type, that your property be approved for business activities in the city, and that you have a fire inspection.

What type of business are you planning to operate?

In Alameda, your business will fall into one of four categories, Office, Retail, Industrial/Manufacturing or Service. Within these categories, your business will need to be declared under one of three classifications: Standard Business, Home Occupation or Contractor Only.

The standard business registration application is a short, one-page application that will take only a few moments to fill out. The contractors license application, which can be downloaded and printed, is another short application that will need to be completed and returned with payment to the Finance Department at 2263 Santa Clara Ave. This application consists of one page requesting you to state your business name, your contractor type, whether you're the sole proprietor, in a partnership, part of a corporation or an LLC.

You must submit your Federal Employee ID Number or social security number, your contractor number, your start and estimated completion dates, and your annual gross receipts estimate in Alameda. You must declare if you will have any subcontractors, vendors or architects working in Alameda. Finally, you will need to provide the names of other owners of your business.
