Do I need a license through the city or county?

If you plan on doing business in Kansas, you may need to obtain a business license through the city in which you operate. There are a few cities that do not require a city business license. An example would be the city of Overland Park. It is best to contact your local city/county to find out if they have a business license requirement. This can either be done in person, phone or by visiting your cities local website. You may also want to find out if your city requires additional licensing or permits, especially if you work from home.

Does Kansas have a state business license ?

If you plan on operating your business in Kansas, you may first need to register your business. Kansas does not have a “General Business License”, however, a business must register with the state of Kansas Department of Revenue and file a business tax application for certain types of businesses. For example, if you engage in sales, you will need a Sales Tax Certificate of Registration with the Kansas Department of Revenue which is obtained by filing the Kansas Business Tax Application (CR-16).

How do you register your business?

Kansas helps make registering your business easy. You can go online to the Kansas Department of Revenue at www.accesskansas.org/businesscenter/index.html This service will give corporations doing business in Kansas the ability to register online with the Secretary of State or to register with the Kansas Department of Labor for unemployment, or to obtain a Sales Tax Certificate of Registration or other special licenses. Another option to register your business is downloading the form from the Kansas Department of Revenues website and returning to: Kansas Department of Revenue 915 SW Harrison St. Topeka, KS 66625-9000 Or fax to: 785-291-3614 The registration process can take at least 4 weeks BEFORE the date you can start your business.

What will I need to register with the state?

Depending on the type of business you have, you may need to file for a Federal Tax Identification Number or you may need to use your Social Security number. You will also need to search for your name registration. This can be done through the business name search on the State of Kansas’s website. Businesses will also need to decide on the business entity (Corporation, Sole Proprietor, LLC, etc.).
