A Master’s Degree is an academic award granted to someone that has studied and achieved an advanced knowledge in a special area of study.  A masters program can run anywhere between 1 and 3 years depending on the area of focus.  Some programs are more rigorous than others.  Virtually every masters program will require undergraduate study (a Bachelor’s Degree).  Some Masters programs also require specific pre-requisites.
