Are there other licensing requirements?

Depending on the type of business and where it is located, new businesses may need additional licenses from their local municipalities. All businesses should check with their local city and county offices to make sure they meet all local requirements. Some businesses may require several licenses and permits issued by the state, county, and local municipality to operate in just one location.

What type of information will ask for on the application?

The type of information you will be asked to provide depends on the types of licenses and permits that your business needs. While every license application is different, there is some common information that all applications will request:

  • Type of business (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, or LLC)
  • Name and mailing address of the person applying for the license
  • Phone number
  • Name of the business
  • The mailing and physical address of the business
  • Names, home addresses, and date of birth for all the owners and partners in the business
  • Description of the main purpose of the business
  • Federal Employer Identification Number, available from the IRS, or a Social Security number in the case of sole proprietors
  • Date of the start of operations in that city
  • Some applications may also request information on how much of your revenue will come from retail sales and details on how many employees you expect to have. If your business works with hazardous or dangerous materials, you may be required to give specific information on your operations in order to get an environmental license.

How can I apply for a business license?

Applications for a state Privilege License are available from your local county office. Most cities have their applications for general and specialized business licenses available online for you to download, along with information on where to send the completed application.
