Apply For A Business License Fairfield, California

Are you planning to open a business in Fairfield, California?

If you are opening a new business, even if you are operating it out of your home in the city of Fairfield, you are required to procure a business license. You will need to visit the customer service window on the first floor of City Hall to request and fill out your business license application and pay your appropriate licensing fees. You can also download and print the application at the City of Fairfield website. You can contact the Business License office at (707) 428-7461.

What are the steps you should take to obtain your Fairfield business license?

The first step in getting your business license is to contact the Planning Division at (707) 428-7461.  The Planning Division will determine if your proposed property is acceptable for the business you plan to operate. Before signing any lease or entering into any real estate contract of any kind, you will need to be sure your business is zone-approved. The next important step is to completely and accurately fill out your Fairfield business license application, and any other applicable permit or license applications you will need.

You will be responsible for getting all required permits before opening your business. You will need to contact the Fairfield Business License office to discuss additional permits or licenses you may need. The business license application is a short document consisting of two pages. On it, you will be asked to supply your business name, the physical location of your business, and all contact information including business phone, email and website. You will need to describe your business activities and supply any applicable tax ID, health permit and numbers of employees.

You must supply information regarding the ownership of the business, meaning that you must state whether you are a sole proprietor, part of a larger corporation, a Limited Liability Corporation or a partnership. You should submit current contact information, valid driver’s license information, and social security numbers for all owners. You will have to have emergency contact with both a phone number and a cell phone number. For Fairfield business license tax calculations, you will need to give annual year gross receipts.

What if you are opening a home-based business?

If you plan to operate a Fairfield business out of your home, you will need to complete a home-based business application. You can print this application off of the City of Fairfield website or you can request one in person at the Fairfield Business License division at 1000 Webster Street, Fairfield, CA 94533-4883. The Fairfield home-based business application must be filled out in addition to your business license application, and you are also required to contact the Planning Division to be sure your home is in the correct zone. There will be a fee for the home-based business application.

The home-based business application outlines all of the regulations that a home-based business proprietor must comply with and what types of business activities are prohibited. You will need to state the name of your business, the mailing address and a detailed description of the business you plan to conduct. You will need to sign a declaration stating that you have read and agree to comply with regulations. If you knowingly submit false information, you could be charged with perjury and will risk having your Fairfield home-based business license revoked or denied. The last page of this application requests that you submit emergency contact information and that you disclose if you handle any hazardous, combustable or toxic materials in operating your business.
