Do you plan to open a business in Cerritos?

You will need to apply for a Cerritos business license if you plan to do any business in Cerritos.  You can pick up an application for a Cerritos business license at City Hall on the second floor, located at the corner of Bloomfield and 183rd street. You can call them at (562) 916-1236 and request that they send an application to you as well or you can simply print it off the City of Cerritos website. 

What can you expect on the Cerritos business license application?

For a Cerritos commercial business license application, there are five forms that are required to be filled out and returned. Please note that you may not fax applications as they will not be accepted. These forms must be filled out completely and accurately to be considered for your business license.

There is a Cerritos business license agreement which consists of a short agreement requiring that you to familiarize yourself with city regulations related to running a business. The next piece of documentation is the actual license application, which requires you to state your business name and location, your contact information, they type of ownership (partnership, sole proprietor, Ltd partnership, LLC, or corporation). You will also be asked to state the type of business you will be conducting whether it is retail, wholesale, manufacturing, home occupation or other type of business. Additionally, you will need to provide information on other owners, your annual receipts, and information about the property that you conduct your business from.

There is a Statement of Use page that requires you to disclose all activities that you will be doing while operating your business. You will have to describe what types of equipment you will be using, whether you will be producing any emissions, handling hazardous chemicals or materials and how you plan to control or limit these hazards.

The Commercial/Industrial Tenant Occupancy Permit Application is another application that requires you to be familiar with regulations in commercial business, and also requires that you have state your zoning type. The last application is a Statement of Intended Use for the County of Los Angeles Fire Department. This is a six-page application that you will use to describe your business, and a survey outlining any hazardous activities that may take place due to your business.

There are specific rules and regulations associated with running a business from your home. These rules are in accordance with Chapter 22.40240 of the Cerritos Municipal Code. There are ten items that you must agree to and comply with in order to keep your Home Occupation permit. 

Are you a contractor?

You will need to fill out a Statement of Authorization. This is a brief document that will require you to state your contractor’s license number and other pertinent information dealing with being a contractor in Cerritos. 

Are there fees for a business license?

The fees that are associated with obtaining a Cerritos business license are generally based on a flat rate. Some business license fees may be based on the number of employees, how large the space that your business occupies or the number of units. If your business runs from your home, you will pay a home-based business fee. Your fees will need to be paid on or before the date of your business commencing. A renewal fee will be due annually.  License fees will increase each year on July 1, though never more than 10%.

What else do you need to know?

There may be other Cerritos permits and licenses that your business may require. For instance, if you are planning on selling alcohol or tobacco at your business, you will have to obtain other permits and licenses to do so. You are responsible for acquiring any additional licenses or permits before you will be granted your business license. Any business that opens in the city of Cerritos is required to comply with zoning regulations. There are some businesses that are forbidden in certain zones. You must contact the City Planning Division to have your property approved. If your business property is not in the proper zone, your Cerritos business license may not be approved.
