We are getting married in San Francisco—where do we apply for our marriage license?

Congratulations! You can apply for your marriage license at the San Mateo County Clerk’s office. The San Mateo County Clerk’s office is on the first floor at 555 County Center, Redwood City, California. At the County Clerk’s office, you will fill out the marriage license application and pay the fee before you receive your marriage license. If you need to contact the office, you can call (650) 363-4500.

Office hours for marriage license services are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Can we apply for a marriage license online?

Yes, but you still need to appear in person at the San Mateo County Clerk’s office within 60 days of submitting the online application in order to receive your license. What are requirements do we need to meet to receive a marriage license in San Francisco, California?

You must both be at least 18 years old and single at the time that you apply. You must show a valid form of photo I.D. such as a driver’s license. If either one of you has been divorced in the last 90 days, that person must bring the court document of final dissolution.

Do we need to have blood tests to apply for a marriage license in San Francisco, California?

No. Blood tests are no longer required by the state of California.

You can be married anywhere in the state of California if you have a public marriage license. If you have a confidential marriage license, you must be married within San Mateo County.

Who can perform our wedding ceremony in San Francisco, California?

You may invite a priest, minister, or rabbi from any religious denomination, a judge, a commissioner or assistant commissioner from the California judicial system, a current mayor, or any other authorized person to perform your wedding ceremony in San Francisco, California.
