Apply For A Kentucky Marriage License

I’ve been told that I need to get a marriage license to get married. What do I need to do?

Yes, in Kentucky all couples who wish to legally marry must first apply for and receive a marriage license from a County Clerk. You may apply at any County Clerk’s office in Kentucky, but both the bride and groom must apply together and in person. Once issued, the license is good for 30 days for use anywhere in the state of Kentucky.

What does the application process entail?

In order to get your marriage license, you must apply in person and fill out the application form. The application may vary from county to county, but generally both the bride and groom will need to provide their full name, city and state of residence, place of birth, date of birth, father’s full name, mother’s full married and maiden name, and social security number. You may also be asked to state your occupation, race, and your anticipated post-marital address and telephone number. Both you and your fiance must present ID when applying for the license. Acceptable forms of ID in Kentucky are a state issued driver’s license, a state issued identification card, or a valid passport.

At what age can we legally marry?

You and your fiance must be 18 to legally marry without parental consent. Those who are under 18 but at least 16 years old can marry with parental consent. In those situations, a parent for the minor must be present with the couple at the County Clerk’s office when filing the application. The application must also be filed in the county where the minor resides. If both the bride and groom are under the age of 18, then you must file the application in the county where the bride resides.

Is there a period of time we must wait to get married after we receive the license?

No, Kentucky does not have a waiting period so you may marry immediately upon receiving the license.

Do we have to pay a fee for the license?

Yes. Generally the cost of a marriage license is $35.50, which must be paid when you file the application. The license fee is nonrefundable, so if you end up not using the license within 30 days you will have to reapply for a new license and pay the fee again.
