Who issues marriage licenses in Indiana?

Marriage licenses are issued by the County Clerk’s Office in all 92 of Indiana’s counties. While the process for applying for a marriage license varies county to county, generally if you or your spouse-to-be is a resident of Indiana, you must apply for the license in the county where you reside. If neither one of you is a resident but you are planning on marrying in Indiana, you must apply for the license in the county where the wedding will occur. You need to apply in person, and most counties require that you and your spouse-to-be apply together. For more information, check with the county where you will be applying for your license.

What information does the application require in Indiana?

The information requested may vary from county to county, but generally you will need to provide your full names, dates of birth, and social security numbers. You may also need to provide your parents’ full names, birth place, and current residence. If either party was previously married, then you will need to give the exact date of the marriage’s termination and may need to provide documentation to that effect. Both parties will also need to provide identification, such as a birth certificate, driver’s license, passport, or military identification card.

Are blood or other medical tests required in Indiana?

No, Indiana no longer requires the bride and groom to obtain blood tests to receive a marriage license.

What is the waiting period in Indiana?

Indiana does not have a waiting period before you can be married. You may marry immediately upon receiving the marriage license.

Does the license expire?

Yes, the license expires 60 days after it is issued. If you do not wed within 60 days, you will need to reapply at the County Clerk’s Office for a new license.

Do we need to pay a license fee in Indiana for the marriage license?

Yes, you will need to pay a fee. The fee for the marriage license depends on the county where you are applying, but the cost generally ranges from $18 to $40 in Indiana.
