APPLY FOR A Marriage License
Nebraska

What is the legal process to get married in Nebraska?

All couples must apply for and receive a marriage license from the state of Nebraska to be legally married there. Licenses are issued on the county level and the application process may vary depending on the county you apply in. However generally the bride and groom will need to file an application with the County Clerk or Comptroller and pay the license fee to receive their license. While it is easiest for both the bride and groom to apply together and in person, many counties in Nebraska do have procedures to allow application by mail.

What are the requirements to be married in Nebraska?

By state law, all applicants must be at least 17 years old to be married in Nebraska and all applicants under the age of 19 require parental consent through a notarized consent form to be issued a marriage license. Applicants must not be currently married and must wait six months and one day after their last marriage ended until they can legally apply for a marriage license. Both the bride and groom must be able to present photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport, and applicants under the age of 19 must present a certified birth certificate when they file their application.

What information does Nebraska require on its marriage license applications?

The application only requires the parties to give some basic information, such as full name, date of birth, place of birth, parents’ full names and birthplace, and your social security numbers. If either applicant was previously married, information on how the marriage was dissolved and the official date of dissolution must also be provided.

Are any blood or medical tests required?

No, Nebraska no longer requires the bride and groom to get blood tests done in order to get their marriage license.

When should we apply for the marriage license?

Nebraska has no formal waiting period so the license is good as soon as it is issued, usually on the day you file your application. The license is good for one year from the date of issue, and can be used anywhere in the state. Therefore you should apply for the license within a year of your planned wedding, and can do so as late as the day of your wedding, although it would be best to file your application a few days before in case there are any problems processing it.
