You’re going to need to apply for a business tax receipt (or business license) to operate a business in Tampa.  This can be done by applying online at the City of Tampa website.  When you have completed the online registration, you will then be sent a tracking number and an access key that you will use to keep track of your progress through the application process.  When you have received your access key and tracking  number, you will be able to download a business license application from the City of Tampa website.

In Tampa, Will You Need Zoning Approval?

You will need to contact the Land Development Coordination at (813)274-8770 to discuss your business location to determine if it is in the proper zone.  It would be wise to contact the Land Development Coordination prior to purchasing or leasing any business location.  Not being certain of your zoning regulations could mean that you are the owner or lessee of a building that may not fall into the proper zone and will be useless to you, though you could still be financially liable for it.

Will You Need to Have Other Licenses or Permits for your Business in Tampa?

Those that are planning to run a business in Tampa will also need to procure a Hillsborough County Business Tax Receipt.  If you are planning to sell alcohol, handle food, or conduct certain other business, you may be required to obtain licenses or inspections for these types of businesses.  If you plan to have any employees for your business, you will need to contact the IRS or visit a local tax agency to get information on being issued an FEIN (federal employer’s tax ID number).  Some professional services require a state license, and you will need to have your state license prior to applying for a Tampa business tax receipt.
