Are You Considering Opening a Business in Clearwater, Florida?

All businesses in Clearwater will need to have a business tax certificate from the Business Tax Receipt Division.  You can download and print it off the City of Clearwater website or you may request an application in person from 100 S. Myrtle Avenue, Suite 210 in Clearwater.  Your business tax receipt must be issued prior to your business commencing. 

Will You Need Additional Clearwater Permits and Licenses?

Depending on the type of business activities that you plan to conduct, you may need to obtain other licenses and/or permits to be in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations for operating a business.  Some of these permits and licenses may include a liquor license for those businesses serving or selling alcoholic beverages, a health permit for businesses that prepare food or handle certain chemicals.  You may need to contact the IRS for a FEIN (federal employer’s ID number).  You may need zoning approval, as well as building, police, and/or fire inspections to be in compliance with all regulations. 

Do You Have All the Information Necessary to Complete Your Clearwater Business Tax Receipt?

You will need to have information that is specific to your business which will serve to register your business with the city.  Some of this information includes whether you own your business individually, as part of a corporation, involved in a partnership, a non-profit, disabled veteran or senior citizen owned.  You will need to provide a description of your business activities, you opening date, as well as a physical and a mailing address.  A business phone and fax number, and a certified business name will need to be supplied.  Your owner information needs to be submitted, such as your home phone number, your email address, and your birthdate.  When you have completed each section of your business tax receipt application, you will need to sign and date it to acknowledge that you are aware and are in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations regarding operating a business.  Your signature also verifies that you have provided true and accurate information for your business tax receipt.  After completing your application, you will need to return it in person to the Business Tax Receipt Division  in person at 100 South Mrytle Ave, room 120.

Do You Wish to Operate a Clearwater Home Based Business?

Those who plan to run a business from home will need to supply a notarized home occupation affidavit from the Development & Neighborhood Services Department stating that you are aware of all the standards and conditions associated with operating a home business in Clearwater.  You may also print this application from the City of Clearwater website.  These regulations include not changing the structure of your home to suit your home business, not using any space outside of your home to operate any business activities, you will not create traffic in excess of what would be normal in a residential neighborhood, etc.  These and other regulations will be required of anyone wishing to conduct business from their home.  If you are not in compliance with any regulations, it may result in your occupation license being revoked or denied.  In addition to being in compliance with all regulations, you will need to supply the name and address of the owner of your home, the name of your business and a description of your business activities to complete your home occupation affidavit.  If you have any questions completing your affidavit paperwork, contact the Development & Neighborhood Services Department at (727)562-4567.
