Who needs a business License?

There are several businesses that will need a specialty license to operate legally in Bloomington. Some of these businesses include window washers, dry cleaners, and cement plants. There are other businesses that may be required to contact other agencies for approval or additional licenses. You may need to have a health permit to operate a business that includes handling food or drinks. According to Chapter 26 of the Bloomington City Code, you will need to apply in person to the City Manager. When your license application has been received, it will be reviewed within one week by the Manager and then will be issued, providing that all your documentation and additional licenses, permits, approvals, and inspections are in place. If you are found to be in non-compliance of any part of the Bloomington City Code, your license will be delayed. Your Bloomington business license is valid for one year and will expire annually on December 31. At the time of your business renewal, your business license fees will be due. 

To renew your business license, you may submit a written affidavit if there has been no change to any part of your application. If there have been changes, you will need to submit a new license. You may request that your business license be transferred to another owner if you sell your business. If you have a license transferred to you, you will need to apply for a new license when the term of the old license expires. Be sure to have your business license displayed in a conspicuous place. 

If you have provided any false information on your business license application or have used your business in a way that is not consistent with what it was issued for, your license could be revoked or suspended.
