Will I need a business license to operate a business in Aurora, Illinois?

Generally, you will not need a business license to conduct business in Aurora. However, you may need certain regulatory licenses for certain businesses. Some of these businesses include transportation-based businesses, liquor stores or bars, those distributing spray paint, pawn shops, etc. 

You will need to contact the Revenue and Collection Division at (630) 256-3560 to discuss all the businesses that require licensing. If you wish, you may visit the Revenue and Collection Division in person at 44 E. Downer Place.

Not requiring a city license does not alleviate any person doing business in the city of Aurora from complying with any local, state, and federal regulations regarding the operation of a business. 

If your business activities involve handling food, you may need to obtain a health permit by contacting the Kane County health department at (630) 897-1124. Those that are planning to peddle goods as part of their business activities will need to register with the City of Aurora City Clerk’s office. They can be reached at (630) 256-3070. If you are planning to peddle food, the Finance Department should be contacted by calling (630) 256-3560. 

If your business activities include peddling goods for a short amount of time for a non-profit foundation, you will need to contact the Aldermen’s Office at (630) 256-3020. It is acceptable to operate a home-based daycare in Aurora, but you will need to contact the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services at (630) 801-3400. 

If you wish to open a retail sales business you will need to register your business with the Illinois Department of Revenue at (800) 732-8866. There may be other agencies that you may be required to contact to operate your business in Aurora.
