Some of these regulations include not conducting any business outside your home, not storing any items used for your business outside of the home, using less than 25% of the total floor space of your home for business operations, not generating noise, fumes, vibrations, etc. in excess of what is normal in a residential area, etc. There are certain businesses that are unacceptable as home occupation, such as dog grooming businesses, automobile repair shops, massage parlors, etc.
The application for a home occupation permit is a short, one-page document that is used to gather the information specific to your home and how it will be utilized in the operation of your home business. The square footage of your home, your address and phone number and a very detailed description of your business activities will be included in your application. Be sure to include the number of employees that do not live in the home and the number of parking spaces that will be used for your business. When you have completed your application and you are certain that you have met all the conditions and regulations regarding a home occupation, you will return your application to the Planning and Development Department. What about zoning?
Your business will need to be properly zoned to be in compliance with city requirements. Be sure that you speak to someone from the Planning Department prior to signing any real estate agreements to determine which zone would be best suited to your business. If you require rezoning for your business, you may need to fill out a rezoning review form to request rezoning. This form is available online at the City of Rocky Mount website.
