How to apply for a Spokane business license?

Businesses operating within the city limits of Spokane are first required to obtain a City of Spokane Business License. You will also need to register with the State of Washington to receive a Unified Business Identifier (UBI) registration number and complete the Master Business Application.

It is required for all new businesses to call the Spokane Fire Department to schedule a Safety Evaluation, contact them at (509) 625-7041. Also, remember to be in compliance with all applicable building and zoning codes and tax requirements.

What information will I need to fill out the City of Spokane Business License application?
You will need the following information:

  • State of Washington Unified Business Identifier (UBI) number
  • Name of business and contact information and birthdates for all owners, officers, and/or partners
  • EIN or SS number
  • Start of business date in Spokane
  • Physical address of all business locations in Spokane with names of personnel and emergency contact information
  • Type of business
  • Description of business activity
  • If business was acquired, name and license number are needed of previous business
  • Number of full time equivalent employees

 

How do I apply for a license?
The City of Spokane currently is not accepting online applications, therefore, you will need to download and complete the application and pay the fees by check or money order payable to City of Spokane. For any questions call the Taxes and Licenses Department at (509) 625-6070, fax at (509) 625-6990 or email treasurer@spokanecity.org. Then choose from one of the following options:

            By mail:
            City of Spokane
            Treasurer’s Office
            808 W Spokane Falls Boulevard
            Spokane, WA 99201

            In person:
First Floor at City Hall, same as the mailing address. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except government holidays. Generally takes about a half an hour to process the application.

What are the fees associated with the licenses?
Here is a breakdown of the fees associated with operating a business in Spokane:

  • Master Business Application fee is $15 and includes the UBI number
  • City of Spokane Business License fee is $110
  • Temporary Business License fee is $55 and is good for 90 days. If the license needs to be renewed the fee is $45 as long as it is done so within the first 90 days
  • Branch fees of $110 for each additional business location within the city limits of Spokane and $20 for each unique name
  • Personnel fee is for everyone associated with the business within the Spokane city limits, except for sole proprietors and spouses. The amount is broken down as $10 each for the first five, $15 each for the next five, and $20 each for the rest (11+)
  • Business Site Evaluation Fee for all new or relocated businesses is $25 for low hazard rated offices and $90 for higher risk offices

 

Any business that generates less than $18,000 in gross revenue during a calendar year will qualify for a reduced fee rate. Contact the Taxes and Licensing Department (509) 625-6070 to see if your business qualifies or for further information.

There are some businesses or services that require special requirements or additional fees, please carefully review the application to see if they apply to your business. Licenses are valid for a period of one year.
