Are you planning to open a business in Tucson, Arizona?

Those that plan to operate a business in Tucson will need to obtain a business license prior to their business opening.  You can apply online or fill out and print an application at the City of Tucson website.  If you wish to apply in person, you can visit the Tucson Finance Department’s Business License Section in City Hall, 255 West Alameda Street.

You will need to have information on yourself as the business owner, as well as information that is specific to your business.  Be sure you have all current and accurate information to complete your application.  You will need to know what type of ownership your business is under (sole ownership, corporation, LLC or LLP) and all current contact information for all owners.  In addition, you will need to supply the social security number and driver’s license number for each owner.  Be sure to check the appropriate box for the type of business license you are applying for, whether you have purchased an existing business, changed the location or name of your existing business, or if you have opened a new business. 

If it applies to your business, supply a federal ID number, state ID number and a state license number.  You will need to have a name for your business, a physical and mailing address, a business phone and fax and a company email address. Provide the name of your corporation if it is different than your business name.  Supply all landlord or property management contact information if you do not own your business property.  You will need to provide the number of employees you plan to hire for your business as well.  Be sure to sign your business license application to denote that you have provided true and complete information, and that you will pay all taxes and fees due to the City of Tucson.  You will need to contact the Business License Section of the Finance Department if you have any questions or need any assistance completing your application. 

Do you plan to operate a Tucson home business?

If you plan to use your home as your business location, you will need to fill out the home occupation form available online on the City of Tucson website, or request one in person at the Finance Department.  The home occupation permit form outlines all of the regulations and conditions that are associated with operating a home business.  Some of these conditions include not using more than one quarter of your total square footage for business operations, that you may not change the look of your home to suit your business, that you will not sell any product from your residence, etc.  These regulations and conditions should be read and understood, and you will need to be in compliance with the entire list of standards. 

What is the cost for a Tucson business license?

There is a basic application fee(can be found on the City of Tucson website), but you may need to pay additional taxes and fees to become fully licensed.  To determine your costs, you will need to contact the Finance Department at (520) 719-4566.  Be aware that you if you are purchasing an established business, you may be liable for paying any back taxes that the previous owner has left outstanding.  It is recommended that you require the previous owner to provide a letter of good standing stating that all taxes and fees are current.  This letter can be issued by the License Section of the Finance Department.  In addition, you will need to contact the Revenue Investigations Section at (520) 792-4247 for information about back taxes and liquor license complaints.
