How will you know which type of Scottsdale license you will need?

Depending on the nature of your business, you will either be issued a business occupational and professional license, or a Scottsdale Transaction Privilege and Use Tax license.  If your business activities includes taxable activities, such as a retail store, a restaurant, property rental, etc., then you will be issued a Privilege and Use Tax license.  If you provide a professional service, such as medical care, accounting, etc., you will be issued a business occupational and professional license.  If you are not sure which license you should apply for, or if your business activities do not fall under either category, you may call the Tax and License Registration office at (480) 312-2400 to discuss your business activities and to determine which license will best suit your business.

What information is needed for the Scottsdale Business Occupational and Professional license and Transaction Privilege & Tax Use license applications?

Both the Scottsdale business occupational and professional license application and the Transaction Privilege and Use Tax license are identical in the information that they require.  This information includes the names, contact information, driver’s license information and social security numbers of all owners of your business, the contact phone numbers and mailing and physical address of your business, and a description of your business.  If you rent your business property, you will need to provide the name and contact information of your landlord or property management company.

In addition, you will need to supply information on previous owners of your business, if it is applicable.  Be sure to submit the ownership type of your business, whether you are the sole owner, if you are involved in a partnership, if your business is part of a larger corporation, a LLC, LLP or another ownership type.  You will need to declare your business type, which could include wholesales, contracting, bar, property rental etc.  Depending on the ownership and business type, you may need to contact the IRS for a FEIN (federal employer’s ID number).  You could also need a state tax ID number from the Arizona Department of Revenue

If you are going to operate a home based business, you will need to supply this, and then complete the supplemental home business questionnaire in addition to the license application.  This questionnaire for a home business is a simple, one page document which asks a series of ‘yes or no’ questions pertaining to your home based business.  Some of these questions include whether you plan to hire employees from outside of your home, whether you will sell goods from your home, if you will use the garage or carport to store goods, etc.  When you have completed your application, return it to the Scottsdale Tax and Licensing Registration Office either by mail to PO box 1586, Scottsdale, AZ 85252-1586 or in person at 7447 East Indian School Rd, Suite 110, 1st Floor.

Will you need other Scottsdale permits or licenses?

There are certain business activities that may require you to apply for additional licenses such as operating a restaurant or a bar.  You would need to apply for a liquor license or a health permit.  Other businesses include massage related businesses, businesses which operate after hours, adult oriented businesses, etc.  There is a complete list of additional businesses which may require separate local, state and/or federal licenses or permits to operate in compliance with all regulations.

Are there costs that you should expect to incur?

Your application fees for a Scottsdale business occupational and professional license or Transaction Privilege and Tax Use license will vary depending on the business you plan to conduct.  Your fees will also vary depending on the time of year that you open your business.  Contact the Tax and Licensing Registration Office to discuss your fees.
