What Information Will I Need to Apply For a Peoria Business License?
To license your business in Peoria, there are several forms that you will need to fill out and return with your application. These forms include a licensing eligibility form, a zoning clearance form, a home occupation statement (if applicable), and a Peoria Police Department responsible party information sheet. Generally, each application will ask for information regarding the name, location, contact information, and activities of your business. Each application will have its own set of specific information that needs to be gathered and submitted.
The licensing eligibility form: will require that you submit at least one legal document that will serve to prove that you are a legal citizen of the United States and that you are eligible to operate a business. Some of the documents which are acceptable proof include a valid state issued driver’s license, a United States birth certificate, a US certificate of citizenship or naturalization, etc.
For a zoning clearance form, you will need to provide information on any improvements or changes you plan to do to the property in which you plan to operate your business from. For information on your zoning approval form, you can contact the City of Peoria’s Current Planning Division at (632)773-7200.
The Peoria Police Department responsible party information sheet requests information about a person that can be reached in the event of an emergency at your business site, when you are unavailable. This person needs to be authorized by the business owner to respond, have information on anything specific that the police should know in case of emergency, and be within a short driving distance from your business property (i.e., not someone who lives out of town or is unable to reach your business in a reasonable amount of time).
A home occupation statement is for those who will be using their home as a business base. In addition to providing information on the use of your home as a business location, and giving specific information on your business activities, you will need to review a set of standards and conditions set forth by the City of Peoria and sign them in a statement of compliance. Some of these standards and conditions include not operating any external business activities after 10:00pm or before 7:00am, having no more than two commercial vehicles parked onsite at any one time, not posting signs to indicate that there is a business being ran from your home, etc.
Your Peoria business license will require all general information listed above, and in addition, you will need to provide information about your business ownership, (is it owned by a corporation, an individual, LLC/LLP?) your business type, (restaurant, retail, rental etc), and your business property ownership. You will need to give the names, contact information and social security numbers of all owners. Additionally, you will need to provide information regarding if you are planning to handle potentially hazardous materials, a description of the business activities you plan to conduct, the number of employees you are going to hire, and the date your business will open.
The type of license that you are applying for, whether you are opening a new business, have purchased an existing business, changed your business location, etc, should be submitted. You need to fill out your Peoria business license application and all supplemental applications fully and truthfully. You will need to sign each application and be certain to be in compliance with all state, local and/or federal regulations and restrictions regarding operating a business. All of the aforementioned applications are available online from the City of Peoria website and should be reviewed prior to applying.
Once you have completed all applications, you should return them together to expedite the process of receiving your business license. They can be returned to the Finance Department at 8401 West Monroe Street on the second floor. If you have any questions or need information regarding any of the applications, call the Finance Department at (623)733-7160.
What Other Information Do I Need to Know?
Be aware that there may be additional Peoria permits, or regulatory licenses that will need to be obtained for certain businesses. Some of these businesses include alarm installation businesses, peddlers or vendors, pawnshops, etc. The City of Peoria breaks business licenses into two categories: a privilege tax license for those that will be collecting sales tax (retail sales, rentals, food sales, etc) and the occupational license, which includes those businesses which provide services (childcare, massages, consultants, etc). You will file the same paperwork for either type of license, but the business license type will affect the payment amount you will be expected to pay. An Peoria occupational license is $75.00 and the privilege tax is $70.00
