To operate a business in the city of Reno, you will need to apply for and be issued a Reno business license. You can request an application from the Business License Division located at 1 East Street, 2nd floor. You may also fill in and print an application from the City of Reno website.
What is the process for applying for a Reno business license?
Early in your licensure process and prior to signing a lease or purchase contract on any business property, you will want to contact the the Reno Community Development Department at (775) 321-8309 to discuss zoning regulations. When you have determined what zone your business will fall under, you will then bring in a copy of your Nevada state business license, your fictitious name certificate, and proof that you have Worker’s Compensation coverage.
You can find information about obtaining a Nevada state business license by visiting www.nvsos.gov. Contact the Washoe County Clerk’s Office at (775) 328-3270 for information regarding a fictitious name certificate. If you are planning to serve or handle food, use certain chemicals and materials, operate a daycare facility, etc. as part of your business, you will need to contact the Washoe County Health Department for a review of your business. They can be reached via telephone at (775) 328-2434. These contacts should be made early on in the process of obtaining your business license as it may take some time to apply and be issued licenses or reviews and you will not be able to operate your business without them. Additionally, there may be other agencies for licenses or permits. Which information is required to complete a Reno business license application?
For a general business license for a business operating in the city of Reno, you will need to supply information regarding your business. The Reno business license application will need information such as the name and all contact information including a home address and two phone numbers of the owner or owners of your business. You will supply a birthdate and title for each owner as well. The ownership type for your business, meaning whether you own your business as a sole proprietor, whether it is part of a corporation, a partnership, LLC, or an association will need to be declared. Depending on the ownership type, you may need to obtain a FEIN (federal employer’s ID number) from the IRS.
You need to give a complete description of your business activities and include whether you will be including rental properties as part of your business and the number that you will be renting. The name you will be using for your business, any phone numbers associated with your business, the physical and mailing address of your business and any other contact information such as email and website addresses should be provided on your Reno business license application. Include the date that you will start your business, the number of employees you plan to hire (both full-time and part-time), and an estimate of your annual gross receipts. Be sure to give the name and all contact information for a person who can be reached in the event of an emergency at your business location.

What about a Reno home occupation?
It is acceptable to operate a business from your home, providing you are in compliance with the standards set forth by the Reno Municipal COde 18.08.203(e)(3) regarding a home occupation. Some of these conditions include not storing any materials or equipment related to your business in any outdoor space, not using more than a quarter or 500 square feet of your total residence for production or storage for your Reno business, not changing the exterior or interior of your home to accommodate your business, etc. You will need to apply for a Reno business license and comply with all local, state, and federal requirements for operating a business in addition to all home occupation conditions.
