General Information
Any business or individual that owns or operates a business within the city limits of Missoula is required to obtain a General Business License. If you have a home based business it is treated the same as the General Business License, even if it is internet based. A Home Occupation Permit is required in addition to the city’s license and can be downloaded from the link under Miscellaneous Forms. You must also comply with the City of Missoula’s zoning, safety, and health regulations before a license can be issued. If a business does not generate more than $3,750 in gross revenue, an exemption affidavit can be filled out and submitted to the Office of Planning and Grants.

How do I apply for a Missoula business license?
The City of Missoula currently is not accepting electronic forms, although it can be downloaded. It is called the Business Tax Determination form. The application and associated fees must be either sent in the mail or delivered in person to: City Hall, 210 North 27th Street, Missoula, MT 59101.
What is the cost of the Missoula business license?
All fees must be paid either in the form of a check or money order and made out to: City of Missoula. Fees are based on the basic tax, number of employees, and a health fee. There are some businesses or services that require special requirements or additional fees, please carefully review the application to see if they apply to your business.
Licenses are valid for one year from the month you received your license and must be renewed each year. Once the fees and application have been processed a temporary license will be issued and a permanent license will be sent within two to four weeks.
