Do I need a business license to do business in Billings, Montana?
Any business operating a business within the city limits of Billings is required to obtain a Billings Business License. The license is proof that taxes have been paid and is required before businesses can begin to transact business within city limits. If your business is physically located outside of Billings but still conducts business within the city limits, you are still required to obtain a license. If your business is known by any other name than your surname, you are required to register with the State of Montana.
What about home-based businesses?
Home-based businesses fall under the same guidelines as regular businesses and are regulated by the City of Billings Zoning Ordinance. How do I apply for a license?
The City of Billings currently is not accepting electronic forms, although the application can be downloaded. It is called the Business Tax Determination form. The application and associated fees must be either sent in the mail or delivered in person to: City Hall, 210 North 27th Street, Billings, MT 59101.
What is the cost of the license?
All fees must be paid either in the form of a check or money order and made out to the City of Billings. Fees are based on the basic tax, number of employees, and a health fee. There are some businesses or services that require special requirements or additional fees. Please carefully review the application to see if they apply to your business.
Licenses are valid for one year from the month you received your license and must be renewed each year. Once the fees and application have been processed a temporary license will be issued and a permanent license will be sent within two to four weeks.
