How can we apply for our marriage license in Springfield, Massachusetts?

In order to apply, you and your spouse to be will have to make a trip to the Springfield City Clerk’s Office.  If you do not want to go the Springfield City Clerk’s Office for any reason, you may go to any City Clerk’s Office throughout Massachusetts, so long as your marriage ceremony will be within the state itself. Ensure that if you print this form it must be done on standard white paper and make sure that it is written in black ink.

How much does the Springfield City marriage license cost?

The Springfield marriage license application fee is $40. It is critical to know that a marriage license application in the State of Massachusetts is also known as a Marriage Intentions Form and once the wedding occurs and is solemnized (you are married), the marriage license itself is called the Marriage Certificate. The fee is due when you remit the application in person, at the City Clerk’s Office. You may pay via: check, cash, Visa or Mastercard. If you are wishing to have a City Clerk marry you, there is an additional charge, please call the City of Springfield at (413) 736-3111 for appointment times and details. Once you are issued the marriage license, you can utilize it immediately and it is valid for 60 days. If the marriage license expires before your wedding, you will need to reapply and pay the fee again. It is very important to pay attention to timeframes. Also, there is a required 3 day wait period after the day that you and your fiancé apply for your Marriage Certificate on the Marriage Intentions Form.

What if one of us was married previously in Springfield or elsewhere?

You will only need to bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or the annulment if it was done in the past 30 days. If it has been longer than that, make certain to have the last date the marriage was valid to supply for the application information. If there was more than 1 previous marriage, please be prepared to give that information as well. Furthermore, Civil Unions must also be disclosed on the application.

  • Bring a driver’s license or photo identification, passport or military card, a birth certificate is also required for proof
