How Can a Business License be Applied For?
Business License Applications are no longer handled by the City of Jackson; Madison County processes Business Licenses, also known as Business Tax Licenses. It is recommended that you avoid Madison County’s website as the business license section is down. The website to apply online is http://www.tncountyclerk.com/. Simply select “Madison County” in the drop down box and you can submit your application right online! You will be prompted to pay the fees for the application at that time, have your debit card, credit card or check information available. This one application will serve as an application for both the City of Jackson and Madison County, business owners are required to have licensing for the City of Jackson as well as Madison County in order to operate within the City’s limits. Every year you will be required to renew your business license, the taxes to renew are determined by the business classification.
How is My Business Classification Determined? What are the Dates the Taxes are Due Each Year?
There are four business classification categories, generally, they are as follows: Class I (Jan 1-Dec 31): service stations, liquor stores and retailers, fuel suppliers. Class II (April 1-March 31): Advertising specialty dealers, automotive dealers, liquor wholesalers, and all business not enumerated elsewhere. Class III (July 1-June 30): antique dealers, delicatessens, jewelry stores, beauty shops, pawn stores, optical, sports goods, etc. Class IV (Oct 1-Sept 30) general contractors, subcontractors and produce dealers. Once the due taxes are paid annually, the business license is renewed. The City of Jackson accepts payments made by personal check, cash and money order.
