How can I apply for a business license in Charleston, South Carolina?

For the ease of Charleston’s citizens, the business license application is available on the internet at Charleston Business License. Scroll to the bottom of the page and look under “Related Documents.” At the bottom of that list you will see “Business License Application and Renewal Form.” At this time, although the business license application is available online, it cannot be returned via the internet. You may remit the business license application in person at the Revenue Collections Office or you may mail the application.

Who is required to have a Certificate of Occupancy to conduct business in Charleston?

All those who wish to have any business within the City of Charlston’s limits are mandated to have a Certificate of Occupancy. Additionally, even non-profit organizations and home-based businesses are required to have a Certificate of Occupancy.

What must I do to operate my business in Charleston from home?

The business license application is different for those who wish to run a home-based business. The process is the same. Scroll to the bottom of the page and look under “Related Documents.” At the bottom of that list you will see “Home Occupation Application.” Just as with the standard business license application, it may be printed out from the website at Charleston Business License and may be submitted in person or by mail. Look above for the address.

Which departments review my business license application in Charleston?

There are four departments that review and approve or deny your application for a business license. They are the Revenue Collections Office, the Zoning Department, the Fire Marshall, and the Building Inspections Department. First, the Revenue Collections Office reviews the type of business you plan to operate. Once they approve, they remit your Business License Application to the Zoning Department, Fire Marshall, and the Building Inspections Department.

These departments ensure the safety and appropriateness of your business location. If your business will be involved with the handling of food or the serving of alcohol, additional approvals are required from the Department of Health and Environmental Control, the Department of Alcohol Beverage and Licensing Division, and the Charleston Water Systems. It takes approximately one to five business days for your business license application to be reviewed in its entirety and for the decision to be made.

The City of Charleston, Revenue Collections Office may be contacted with any questions that you may have regarding obtaining a business license. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
