How do I acquire a business or occupational license in Monroe, Louisiana?

In the City of Monroe, the business license is also known as the occupational license. There are a number of prerequisites that must be fulfilled prior to the City issuing you an occupational license. First, a Certificate of Occupancy is required. Below, you will find the method in which you can obtain one. Next, you will need a Monroe Use and Sales Tax Number and State and Federal Tax Identification Numbers. Both are required to complete the business application process. You can contact the Tax and Revenue Department at (318) 329-2279 for information on how to obtain these numbers.

The Tax and Revenue Department is located at 316 Breard Street, Monroe, LA 71201. You may download the Occupational License Application directly on the City of Monroe’s website at: Monroe Business License. At this time, the application is not interactive.

You can fax it the completed application to (318) 329-2362 (so long as you pay the fee within 30 days) or you can mail it to the Tax and Revenue Division, P.O. Box 123, Monroe, LA 71210-0123. Additionally, you can apply in person at the City Hall Annex Building, Taxation and Revenue, Utilities Operations, 316 Breard Street, Monroe, LA 71201.

How can I receive a Monroe Certificate of Occupancy?

Neither land nor structure is able to be used until a Certificate of Occupancy is issued by the City of Monroe. Also, businesses are not permitted to proceed until they possess a Certificate of Occupancy. This can be obtained by physically going to the Planning and Zoning Office. At that time, a $75 fee will be due in order to fully submit your application for a Certificate of Occupancy. Currently, the application is not available online. The cost, also known as the occupational license tax, is based on the type of business that you will operate and the estimated annual gross receipts. The occupational license tax is found on the reverse side of the occupational license application. If you obtain it online, it is found at the bottom of the page. The occupational license tax is due by the last day of February of each year. The license is then mailed to you.
