APPLY FOR A Building Permit
Michigan

How do I get a building permit in Michigan?

Building permits in Michigan are issued by the city government in the city where the projet is located. In the case of unincorporated areas, it is usually the county that will issue the building permit. In order to get a building permit, you will need to file a completed application with detailed schematics of the proposed construction to the appropriate permitting office and pay the permit fee. Once your plan is approved, the permit will be issued. Some cities like Ann Arbor have programs that allow you to get building permits for small projects such as residential remodeling over the counter. Otherwise, you will normally have to drop off your application and come back another day to pick up your permit once it is approved.

How do I know if I need a building permit in Michigan?

Because building permits are issued at the local level, the requirements for when you need a permit will depend on the city in Michigan where you are located. However usually all new construction will require a permit. This includes additions to an existing building, structural remodeling, and detached features such as swimming pools and decks. Depending on the type, size, and scope of your project, you may need to acquire additional permits besides a basic building permit. Projects that do not require a permit include finishing work such as painting, carpeting, and tiling and most basic ordinary repairs. Because working without a permit when one is needed can result in fines and penalties, it is best to check with your local city government in Michigan before starting any project that involves construction.

What kind of construction permits are there in Michigan?

In addition to basic building permits, there are several other permits that you may need to get before starting construction in Michigan. These include grading permits for paving and surfacing work, zoning permits to approve of the proposed use of the building, electrical permits, mechanical permits, plumbing and septic permits, and demolition permits. If the property is located within an historic district, you may need additional approvals or reviews before construction will be approved.

What is the cost of a building permit in most Michigan jurisdictions?

Cities set the fees for building permits differently, so there is no one way that fees are calculated in Michigan. Generally the cost of the permit will be calculated based on the overall cost of the project, the added value of the project, the size of the project, or a combination of these factors. Your local city building division will have more information on the applicable fee schedule for your project.
