Can we apply at the City of Worcester and have our wedding ceremony elsewhere?

Yes, definitely. Actually, you can have your wedding ceremony anywhere in the State of Massachusetts, so long as it is within state borders. Also, if your marriage will be in Massachusetts, you can apply at any City Clerk’s Office. Typically, couples apply at the City Clerk’s Office that is in the closest location. For Worcester, this is the Worcester City Clerk’s Office.

Can we mail the marriage license application to the Worcester City Clerk for our marriage license?

Every couple that will apply with the Worcester City Clerk for a marriage license will be required to do so in person. Sometimes, there are extenuating circumstances that the Worcester City Clerk will permit applications to be mailed (you must call (508) 929-1300), but for the vast majority of cases, couples must go to the City Clerk’s Office to successfully apply. Once you apply, there is a required 3 day wait time before you can pick up the marriage license (also called the Marriage Certificate), brides and grooms that wish to circumvent the 3 day wait time, you will need to schedule a hearing with a District Judge pay approximately $200 (or more) and attach that document to the Marriage Intentions Form (marriage license application).

What age do we need to be in order to get married in Worcester?

To be wed in the State of Massachusetts, including the City of Worcester, couples need to be at least 18 years of age. For minors who are 15-17, a legal guardian will have to grant authorization as well as a District Judge by way of a hearing, a court document will be granted that will have to be attached to the Marriage Intentions Form.

What is acceptable identity proof to get our marriage license in Worcester?

Bring a current DMV issued Photo I.D. or a Driver’s License, or if unavailable, then you can bring a Military I.D., Passport, or State I.D. Birth certificates are also a requirement, along with your social security cards as they will need to be copied. Blood tests are no longer required to obtain your Marriage Certificate.

What details will we need to collect to complete the Worcester Marriage Certificate?

  • Your full legal names, as well as the maiden name

  • Permanent addresses, mailing addresses both of yours

  • Complete legal names of all parents, both mothers and fathers

  • Social Security numbers and cards

  • Place of birth and date of birth for each applicant (whether it was a city or town, what county or parish, and what state)

  • Where the father and mother were born, what city and state

  • If either of you has had previous marriages you will be required to disclose which number it is for example, the 4th marriage. Additionally, you will be required to give the date in which the previous marriage was final annulment paperwork is not required, but you will need to make certain that the marriage is truly over before you can apply with the Marriage Intentions Form

  • Signatures and dates

  • Certification that you and your fiancé are not closely related by blood, such as a grandparent, parent or sibling

  • A $40 fee is also due when the application is submitted, be prepared to pay via a: check or cash or a money order.
