Who can marry us in Medford?

Before you look for officiators to marry you, it is important to know that you can only apply for your marriage license by going in person to the Medford City Clerk’s Office, the address is found below. The State of Massachusetts is clear on who is able to legally perform a wedding and have that marriage viewed as sanctified in the eyes of the law. They are:

  • Rabbis, Ministers, Pastors, Priests, any religious denomination and are in regular association with their particular religion and are at least 18 years of age

  • Mayors of municipalities

  • Native American spiritual advisors

  • The president of the Senate

  • County Clerks that have chosen to solemnize marriages

  • Judges or Magistrates of the United States (sometimes even when retired may still perform the ceremony based upon Supreme Court ruling)

  • A Judge or a Commissioner of a court and is currently on record

  • The Governor

  • What kinds of questions will we need to answer for our marriage license in Medford?

    The questions that will be inquired about on the marriage license application, also known as the Marriage Intentions Form will need to be answered with these personal details:

  • Your full names (they must be your legal names and not nicknames)

  • Addresses, residential and mailing are required as well as where you want the Marriage Certificate sent

  • Date of birth, both you and your fiancé’s

  • Your employment type and dates that you began work

  • Number of previous marriages and the date they officially ended, indicate if it was by death or divorce, death certificates are not required if that was the case, if there is or was a Civil-Union or state created Domestic Partnership

  • Social security numbers

  • Birthplaces of you and your fiancé

  • Names and birthplaces of parents, please include all 

  • Gender of you and your spouse to be

  • Disclosure if applicants are closely related by blood, like parents, brothers or sisters

  • Signatures and dates

  • Be aware that the Marriage Intentions Form is not able to be downloaded online. The City Clerk of Medford requires that you come in person to successfully apply for your marriage license. Sometimes exceptions can be made, however, you will need to speak with a representative of the City of Medford to find out if arrangements can happen. Call them at (781)396-5500.

    How much will the Medford marriage license be?

    The marriage license, also called the Marriage Certificate is $30 and can be paid using a check or Visa or Mastercard. Only under certain circumstances can cash be used, please do not rely on this method unless previously approved by a representative from the Medford City Clerk’s Office.
    What is the age requirement to be married in Medford?

    Both parties of the couple need to be at least 18 years of age. Minors who are 15 through 17 must have parental or guardian permission and permission from a Juvenile Court. If permission is granted by the court, documents will be given after a hearing.

    Do we need a blood test for our Medford Marriage Certificate?

    No. Since 2005, the law has been amended to not mandate couples to obtain a blood test prior to being given a marriage license or Marriage Certificate. No blood test will be required of you.
