Apply For A Connecticut Marriage License
Do I need to apply for a marriage license to get married in Connecticut?
Yes, in order to legally marry, you must first obtain a marriage license. In order to get a marriage license, both you and your spouse-to-be must appear in person at a local Vital Records Office to file a marriage license application and pay the applicable fees. In Connecticut, you have the option of applying for your license in the town where the wedding will occur or in the town where you or your spouse-to-be reside. Once the wedding occurs, the license will be returned to the Vital Records Office and it becomes an official marriage certificate. If you wish to have a copy, you can request a certified copy of the marriage certificate when filing for the marriage license.
What information should we bring with us for filling out the application?
The information requested will depend on the city or town where you apply, but generally you will need to provide both party’s full name, date of birth, social security number, and the town where the ceremony will occur. Both parties will also need to provide government issued ID, such as a valid driver’s license, passport, or military identification card. In addition to this, you may be asked to provide the name of the person who will officiate the wedding and their contact information, and proof of residence if the wedding is to occur in another town. If either party was previously married or belonged in a civil union, you will often be asked to provide details about how and when that relationship ended.
Are blood tests required?
No, Connecticut no longer requires any blood or medical tests in order to get a marriage license.
Does the license ever expire?
Once issued, the marriage license is good for 65 days. If the wedding ceremony does not occur within those 65 days, then you will need to reapply for a new license.
What fees do we need to pay when applying for the license?
While the cost may vary depending on location, the general fee for a marriage license in Connecticut is $30 and an additional $10 is you want a certified copy of the final marriage certificate.
Is there a different process for a civil union license?
Generally, the process is very similar. You must still file an application at your local Vital Records Office. However, the application itself is normally different from that of a marriage license and often requires less information than described above. However, other than that, the processes are the same.
