How can we receive our marriage certificate in Lowell?

It is important to understand that you and your spouse-to-be must appear together at the Lowell City Clerk’s Office in order to apply successfully.  If one or both of you cannot come, you will need to contact the Lowell City Clerk to make arrangements at (978) 970-4161. Only certain circumstances will be accommodated such as hospitalization, extreme illness or incarceration, but if you have questions please don’t hesitate to call.

What fee will be due for our Lowell marriage license?

The Lowell marriage certificate costs $30, with a separate fee of $10 for a certified copy, which brings the total to $40. You can see details of fees at the Lowell Marriage License Fee page.  Cash is not accepted, but payments can be made using a Visa or Mastercard or a checking account.

What if our wedding ceremony will be in another city, but we are residents of Lowell MA?

This happens all of the time. Actually, as long as you plan to be wed anywhere in the State of Massachusetts, you can apply at any City Clerk’s Office in the whole of the state. If you will be entering into a Domestic Partnership you can obtain those details on the Lowell Marriage License  website.  If your wedding will occur outside of the State of Massachusetts, please contact that state with questions regarding their policies for marriage ceremonies and marriage licenses.

What will we need to bring for the Lowell marriage license application?

You will need:  Identification (can be Driver’s License or DMV Photo I.D., a military card, a passport or a birth certificate, if you bring a birth certificate, also bring some kind of accompanying photo I.D.),names (yours and your parents’), addresses (mailing and physical), social security numbers, who will solemnize the marriage and what date it will happen, birthplaces (yours and your parents’), birthdates (you and your fiancé’s, parents’ are not required), your genders, disclose if there were any previous marriages (if so how many) or previous Domestic Partnerships, certification that you and your fiancé are not closely related by blood, signatures and dates.

Do we need to get a blood test in order to get our Lowell marriage certificate?

Since January 2005, couples no longer are required to obtain a blood test to be able to get married. However, what is important to know is that there is a 3 day waiting period once you and your fiancé apply for your marriage certificate to receive it. As the office closes at 4:30, you will need to make sure that you come to apply no later than 4:00pm, otherwise you may have to come back to the office to apply. Applications taken from the office will not be accepted later.
