Do you need a business license to operate a business in Salt Lake City, Utah?

To operate a business in Salt Lake City, you must obtain permission from the Salt Lake City Corporation. This is true even if you are operating a business from your home. Salt Lake City grants business licenses for this purpose.

What information do you need?

The following information is required to obtain a business license from Salt Lake City:

  • Completed application form

  • Utah State Department of Commerce Registration
  • State Sales Tax Number
  • Federal Tax ID Number

How long does it take?

Salt Lake City suggests that you wait until 30 days prior to opening your business to apply for a license. If it takes longer than 30 days to open your business from the time you submit your application, you may be required to pay additional re-inspection fees. Salt Lake City suggests that you contact the business license staff at their office or call them prior to submitting your application to ensure a smooth process. Business licenses are usually approved within 30 days of a received application.

How much does a business license cost?

A non-refundable $100 application fee is required for every new business license. There is also a $15 fee for every full-time employee and a $15 fee for every part-time employee. Are any other licenses or permits required?

Home License:

A Home Occupation Permit is required to operate a business from your home. There is a $110.74 fee for a Home Occupation Permit. If your Home Occupation Permit is approved, there is a $75 fee for a Home Occupation License. You may also be subject to an additional Disproportionate Fee, depending on the nature of your business.

Alcohol License:

To serve alcohol at your business, you must obtain a separate license from both Salt Lake City and the State of Utah’s Division of Alcohol Beverage Control. There are several types of licenses granted to serve alcohol depending on the nature of your business:

  • Class A Beer License: Common for grocery and convenience stores
  • Class B Beer License: Common for restaurants
  • Class C Beer License: Common for bars and taverns
  • Class D Beer License: Common for special events at a business location
  • Class E Beer License: Common for recreational facilities
  • Class F Beer License: Common for breweries
  • Temporary Beer License: For temporary businesses
  • Liquor Consumption License: Common for restaurants
  • Private Club- Class B License: Common for liquor consumption at private clubs

Sexually-Oriented Business License:

 

Salt Lake City defines a sexually-oriented business as one that offers “nude entertainment businesses, sexually-oriented outcall services, adult businesses, seminude dancing bars, and seminude dancing agencies” (5.61.040, A.19).
