What information will I need to complete my application for a Winston-Salem business license?

The Winston-Salem business license application is a fairly short document that gathers basic information about you as the business owner and about the business you plan to operate. You will need to provide information such as the physical and mailing address of your business, the name of your business, and any email addresses or phone numbers associated with your business. A projection of your business start date should be included as well as the name of the owner and/or president of your business and whether your business is owned by a minority or a woman. There is a brief section for you to include gross receipts if they apply to your business. When you have completed your application, you will sign and date it to certify that all information is true and accurate and then you may either mail, fax, or hand-deliver your business license application to the Revenue Division.

How long will my license be valid?

Your Winston-Salem business license is valid for one year and will need to be renewed annually by May 1. If you have a beer and wine license, it expires on July 1. Be sure to pay your fees and renew your license promptly to avoid being subject to delinquency penalties.

I am planning to operate my business from my home. Is this acceptable in Winston-Salem?

It is acceptable to operate a business from your residence providing that you have applied for and are issued a home business permit. The application for a home business permit is available online at the City of Winston-Salem website. This application outlines the regulations and conditions associated with operating a business from your home. You will be expected to abide by all the regulations and restrictions in order to operate your business or you may risk your license being denied or revoked. Some of these conditions include only operating your business inside of your home and not having any exterior evidence of your home business except a 12” by 12” sign. You will need to use no more than 25% of your total square footage of your home for business activities and you may not hire anyone outside of your home as a business employee.

The information that you supply for your home occupation permit application includes your name, a detailed description of your business activities, the number of parking spaces you may use, etc. Be sure to sign your application and provide only true information as your license may be revoked or denied if any information is found to be false. Include a floor plan and a parking diagram in your application packet. Your home business will need to meet zoning requirements and you will need to remit a $100 fee for your home occupation permit.
