Those that are planning to open a business in Asheville will need to apply for and be issued a business license from the City of Asheville Development Services Center. The City of Asheville uses the term ‘privilege license’ interchangeably with the term ‘business license.’ For this article, the term business license will be used throughout. To apply for a business license, you may visit the City of Asheville Development Services Center located at 161 South Charlotte Street in Asheville or you may download the application for a business license from the City of Asheville website. 

What information is required on an Asheville business license application?

Your business license application will need to have specific information related to your business and for you as the owner. Some of this information includes the following:

  1. A physical and mailing address for your business
  2. Type of business ownership (solely owned, part of a corporation, LLC, branch/chain, or partnership)
  3. An estimate of your gross receipts or a tax return from a previous year
  4. Description of your business operations
  5. All contact information for your business including email and all phone numbers
  6. Emergency contact name and phone number
  7. Whether you are a minority or woman
  8. Name of all owners
  9. Contractor’s license number and/or FEIN (federal employer’s tax ID number) if applicable
  10. A signature and printed name as well as a date to denote that you have provided only true information and that you understand all regulations and restrictions regarding operating a business, whether federal, state, and/or local

Will you need additional permits or licenses?

Depending on where your business is located, the type of business you plan to conduct, and other determining factors, you may need to contact other agencies for additional permits. For example, you may need to contact the IRS for a federal employer’s ID number if you are planning to hire any employees. You will may need to obtain a building or fire permit if you plan to conduct any type of remodeling or if you will be using certain equipment at your business location. A zoning permit may need to be issued from the Development Services Center for businesses being operated on private property. What are the costs for an Asheville business license?

Your business license costs will be determined from criteria specific to your business such as your gross sales from the previous year. It may also be based on fees which are regulated by the state of North Carolina. Your business license fees will be due annually by June 30. If you are operating a non-profit organization, you may be exempt from business license fees, but you will need to provide documentation to prove your exempt status.
