In the city of Wilmington, you will need to apply for and be issued a business license to operate a business within the city limits. You may obtain a business license application by visiting the Business License Division of the City of Wilmington at 800 North French Street. If you wish, a business license application is available online at the City of Wilmington website to print. 

Will you need other permits or licenses?

If you plan to apply for mechanical refrigeration, air conditioning, boiler installation, heating, and/or plumbing contractor’s licenses, you will need to contact the Chief Plumbing Inspector to take a trade test prior to obtaining a business license. The Chief Plumbing Inspector can be contacted by calling (302) 576-3030. Those that plan to operate a restaurant or sell edible items will need to have a copy of their Board of Health certificate prior to obtaining a business license. Some businesses will need to contact the IRS for a federal employer’s ID number or the State of Delaware for a state license number. There may be other businesses that require licenses and permits beyond your business license, whether local, state, and/or federal.   • Type of business ownership (corporation, estate/trust, individual owner, partnership, LLC, non-profit, holding company)

  • Owner name and contact information
  • Owner’s social security number
  • Federal employer’s ID number (if applicable)
  • Start date of business
  • Name and phone number of a business contact person
  • Description of the nature of the business
  • (attached separately) List of names of additional owners or partners with contact information and social security numbers
  • Number of employees who will be working within the city per month
  • Signature of owner, with date and title
