Yes, you do! Every business must have a business license, also called a Business Tax Registration Certificate, before opening for business in Atlanta, GA. Even if the business is simply changing owners, you must apply for a new business license. Also, you must get a new business license for each location of the same business.
How do I apply for a small business license in Atlanta?
First, you must go to the Zoning Enforcement Division (Atlanta Georgia Zoning), located at 55 Trinity Avenue SW, Suite 3900, Atlanta, GA 30303 (404-330-6175), to verify that your business is located within the city limits of Atlanta, GA and to obtain approval for your business location. After you receive approval for your location, you must fill out the New Business Tax Application Form, found here. Once this form is filled out, you must take your zoning approval, your completed application form, a photo ID, proof that your business is incorporated (if applicable), and a $75 non-refundable registration fee (checks are not accepted) to the City of Atlanta Business Tax Division, 55 Trinity Avenue, SW, Suite 1350, Atlanta, Georgia 30335-0317. If you apply in person, it should take 30 minutes to receive your temporary permit that expires in 30 days. Once you have been billed for and have paid the taxes for your new business, you will be issued a permanent business license. Please note that the Business Tax Division processes applications from 8:15 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. every weekday except Tuesday.
You may also apply for a small business license via mail. To do this, mail a completed New Business Tax Application and the $75 registration fee (using a money order or a certified bank check made out to the City of Atlanta) to City of Atlanta Business Tax Division, 55 Trinity Avenue, SW, Suite 1350, Atlanta, Georgia 30335-0317. If you choose to apply via mail, allow 6 to 8 weeks for processing.
